Blackstone and the SmART Museum are teaming up again to bring you SmART Saturdays! Join the Smart Museum and the Blackstone and Bessie Coleman branches of the Chicago Public Library for a free, artist-led family workshop that includes an art project and related story. The following books are on the schedule for 2009-10:
October: Zoom by Istvan Banyai
A wordless picture book presents a series of scenes, each one from farther away, showing, for example, a girl playing with toys which is actually a picture on a magazine cover, which is part of a sign on a bus, and so on.
November: Llama, Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney
Llama Llama experiences separation anxiety on his first day of nursery school.
December: Metal Man by Aaron Reynolds
One hot summer day, a man who makes sculpture out of junk helps a boy create what he sees in his mind’s eye.
January: City ABC Book by Zoran Milich
With a little imagination, the secret world of letters hidden in the architecture of a busy city can be discovered.
February: Henry’s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine
A fictionalized account of how in 1849 a Virginia slave, Henry “Box” Brown, escapes to freedom by shipping himself in a wooden crate from Richmond to Philadelphia.
March: The Journey by Sarah Stewart
A young Amish girl tells her “silent friend,” her diary, about all the wonderous experiences she has on her first trip to a city, Chicago.
April: Round Trip by Ann Jonas
Black and white illustrations and text record the sights on a day trip to the city and back home again to the country. The trip to the city is read from front to back and the return trip from back to front, upside down.
May: The Magic Pillow by Demi
A poor young boy in China yearns for wealth and power, until a magician gives him a magic pillow that brings dreams of what would happen if his wishes came true.
