Restoration in Progress

Blackstone Rotunda

If you’ve been to Blackstone in the last week, you undoubtedly noticed that the main rotunda entryway is covered in scaffolding.

Conservators are working on the rotunda mural, which hasn’t had any restoration work since the library first opened in 1904. In fact, the mural has gotten so obscured with dirt and grime over the years, it’s likely many patrons have never even noticed it. The work will take place over the summer, and there are tentative dates being planned for the conservators to discuss their work with the public. WTTW, Channel 11, will also be following the progress of the restoration.

Stay tuned here for more updates!

  1. That’s wonderful news! I remember coming to Blackstone a few years ago to hear a talk on the murals, and I am glad to hear that they are being restored.
